Important information about the limitations of LawCite

Last updated: January 1, 2025

02 — How LawCite Works

LawCite uses advanced artificial intelligence to analyze your scenarios and provide relevant legal analysis. When you submit a scenario, LawCite:

01Analyzes your scenario to identify relevant legal issues and constitutional considerations
02Searches our verified case law database and legal sources for relevant precedents
03Generates analysis applying legal principles to your specific situation
04Attempts to verify all cited cases against our database of confirmed legal authorities

03 — AI Limitations

While LawCite employs sophisticated AI technology and verification systems, it is important to understand the inherent limitations:

AI can make mistakes: AI systems, regardless of their sophistication, can occasionally generate incorrect information, misinterpret scenarios, or cite cases inaccurately.
Context limitations: AI cannot fully understand all nuances of a real-world situation that may affect legal analysis.
Not a substitute for training: LawCite supplements but does not replace proper law enforcement training, departmental policies, or professional legal counsel.

04 — Case Verification Status

LawCite maintains a database of verified case law. Each case cited in our analysis is checked against this database:

Verified Cases

Cases marked as verified have been matched to our database of confirmed legal authorities. While this provides additional confidence, you should still confirm the citation and holding are accurate and current for your specific use.

Unverified Cases

Cases marked as unverified could not be matched to our database. This does not necessarily mean the case is invalid — it may be a legitimate case that is not yet in our system. However, these cases require additional verification on your part before relying on them.

When an unverified case is cited, a request is automatically submitted to our legal team for review and potential inclusion in our verified database.

05 — Your Responsibilities

Consult legal counsel: Always consult with your department's legal counsel or a qualified attorney before taking action based on any information from LawCite.
Follow department policies: LawCite does not replace your agency's policies, procedures, or training. Always follow established protocols.
Verify current law: Laws and case precedents change over time. Verify that any cited cases or statutes are still current and applicable in your jurisdiction.
Obtain proper authorization: Always obtain proper legal authorization (warrants, supervisor approval, etc.) when required by law or policy.
Document only facts: Any articulation or documentation suggestions in LawCite's analysis apply only to what actually occurred. Never document facts that are not true.

06 — When in Doubt

The application of law to specific facts requires professional legal judgment. When in doubt about any legal issue, seek guidance from your agency's legal advisor or prosecutor's office before proceeding. LawCite is designed to be a starting point for research, not the final word on any legal matter.
